There’s something about a lake that makes you want to stay forever. Maybe it’s the way the water catches the light at sunset, or the way laughter echoes across the dock. Maybe it’s just the promise of a cold drink in your hand and nowhere else to be.

For decades, lakes have been America’s unofficial summer headquarters… a place where city folk fled the heat in the ‘60s, where families built cabins and campfire traditions in the ‘70s, and where the ‘80s brought boom boxes, water skis, and a new wave of livin’ lakeside.

Whatever it is, every lake has its own vibe… and so does every lake goer.

So, what’s your lake mood? Are you the one who brings the playlist, or the one who brings the picnic? Do you live for the party, or for the peace? For this issue, we’ve partnered with Lake Hour to bring you America’s best lakes, matched up to the personalities who’d love them the most.

By the way, this isn’t some slapped-together list. We searched high and low to find each lake that has a story, a vibe, or a sense of summer that fits a specific mood. It could be a legendary party spot, a hidden retreat, or a place where families return generation after generation. Some are easy to reach, some are worth the journey, but all are perfect for a summer escape.

The Party Animal

You’re the one who turns a lazy afternoon into an all-day affair. The Party Animal lives for sunset cruises, spontaneous boat parties, and the kind of nights where the playlist is as loud as the laughter. Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri:

This is where strangers become friends, and the good times have a way of stretching late into the night.

Lake Hour says: “Keep the cooler stocked and the vibes high.”
